The article examines artist residencies as systems of exchange between art practice, institutions and local communities. It considers the development of the residency-based Artists Programme for Tate St Ives’ Palais de Danse and a series of case studies to explore how residencies can extend art’s civic agency beyond the boundaries of the art world.
